Chea Samnang was born on 25 December 1971 in the capital, Phnom Penh. He spent a lot of his childhood in the countryside, after his family fled the city during the rule of the Khmer Rouge. After the regime's collapse, his family returned to Phnom Penh, where he went to school and completed his secondary education in 1988. He proceeded to a university in 1992 and became a medical doctor in 1999.
Dr. Chea Samnang has committed himself to working with youth, raising awareness about women's equality, reproductive health issues and HIV/AIDS, which is referred to as his country's “second killing fields”. He is also an active advocate of gender equality and well known among public audiences, in particular, young people due to his famous reputation as a film and Karaoke stars.
Based on his characteristics, visibility, dedication and commitment to reproductive health issues UNFPA Cambodia proposed him to be a goodwill ambassador in 2000 onwards.
In his capacity as GWA and movie star, Dr. Chea share with his peers on major concerns and issues related to population and development faced by Cambodia. Through his interaction locally and externally with various potential people ranging from beneficiaries to influential persons, he made known the fact that Cambodia is experiencing a low education among general population including low awareness on sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS and STIs mismatch between population growth and resource required to support Cambodia.
Dr. Chea called for the commitments from government, donor community providing assistance to vulnerable persons, particularly women and young people.
