The Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA) with the support from UNFPA and Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) organized a consultative workshop on Violence Against Women (VAW) Data in Cambodia on 14th-16th June 2016, with the presence of representatives from National Institute for Statistics (NIS) and Ministry of Health (MoH). The three-day workshop was facilitated by Dr. Henriette Jansen, International Researcher on VAW from UNFPA Asia Pacific Regional Office (APRO) and Ms. Pauline Gulliver, international consultant.
The workshop was divided into two main sections, capacity building and discussion over the “Secondary Analysis of Domestic Violence Data: Levels and Trends of Intimate Partner Violence in Cambodia”. The two guest speakers provided participants insights into different terminologies such as violence against women, gender-based violence, domestic violence and intimate partner violence and explained how the use of each word might have different impacts on data and interpretation. Dr. Jansen and Ms. Gulliver also provided an interesting session on the UN indicators/SDG indicators in relation to VAW.
After having understood the concept and data analysis related to VAW, participants started to actively engage in giving feedbacks and comments on the draft of the “Secondary Analysis of Domestic Violence Data: Levels and Trends of Intimate Partner Violence in Cambodia” which is the further analysis of Cambodia Demographic Health Surveys (CDHS) from NIS in 2000, 2005 and 2014.
The in-depth report aims to give the overall picture of intimate partner violence in Cambodia between 2000 and 2014 so as to enhance the understanding of policymakers and other stakeholders on areas for programs to prevent and effectively respond to survivors of violence needs.
The publication is expected to be ready in September and will be available on the UNFPA Cambodia website for download.
